George Marrington
George Marrington (B.1999, London) is an emerging artist based in Surrey. He graduated in 2023 with a BA in Art from The University of Reading.
Marrington had his debut solo show in October 2023 at Modern Art Oxford as part of the Platform Graduate Award 2023. He has also been part of several group shows taking place in London, Oxford, Reading and online.
George constructs paintings from an archive of images captured by himself and those close to him. Creating works on the theme of memory, the artist takes a particular focus to exploring the diverse materiality of oil paint. Images used are translated from reference into a new medium, exploring the subjects of adolescence and uncertainty that are present in the years of early adulthood.
Heavily diluted washes of oil, gestural marks and blocks of colour, highlight not only chance but intention. This duality conceives a looming mist of memory that bleeds and branches off into the canvas. Thicker builds of oil sit on the surface adding dimension to the figurative elements that feature in the works, the result is an environment rich in colour somewhere between pipe dream and actuality.
